How to Clean Your Home After a Smoke Day in the Bay Area

- Check the Air Quality Index before opening windows. Smoke can linger even when the sky looks clear.
- Do not use shop vacuums or leaf blowers on ash. Use a HEPA vacuum, or sweep gently and damp-wipe.
- Wipe hard surfaces with a damp cloth, wash fabrics, and clean dishes and food surfaces.
- Replace your HVAC filter after heavy smoke.
This fall, Bay Area residents smelled smoke without any wildfire nearby. On September 23, a prescribed burn on Angel Island sent smoke into San Francisco and West Contra Costa County, and air quality along the Richmond coast went above 400 on the Air Quality Index, according to KQED. The burn was stopped early, and the Bay Area Air District called off further burns there for the rest of the year and said it would reassess its permit process. (KQED, September 25, 2026)
Smoke days leave something behind indoors: a fine layer of dust and, closer to the source, ash on sills, floors and furniture. Here is how to clean it up safely, based on guidance from California air quality agencies.
1. Check the air before you open up
Do not open every window the moment the haze looks lighter. Check the current AQI for your area first (for example at fire.airnow.gov) and wait until readings are back to healthy levels. During smoke, keep windows closed and use air filtration if you have it. (Bay Area Air District advisory)
2. Do not blow the dust back into the air
Fine particles are the problem, so the goal is to capture them, not move them around. The Monterey Bay Air Resources District advises against shop vacuums and leaf blowers for ash and recommends vacuums with HEPA filters, or gentle sweeping followed by damp mopping. (MBARD, Wildfire ash cleanup)
3. Damp-wipe hard surfaces, top to bottom
- Start high: shelves, tops of cabinets, light fixtures and ceiling fan blades.
- Window sills and tracks, where smoke dust settles first.
- Counters, tables and electronics (with a barely damp cloth).
- Baseboards, door frames and vent covers.
- Floors last: HEPA vacuum, then damp mop hard floors.
Rinse or swap microfiber cloths often so you are lifting the dust off, not spreading it.
4. Kitchen, dishes and fabrics
Air quality guidance says not to eat food that was exposed to smoke or ash, and to clean and sanitize dishes, cutlery and food-contact surfaces. Wash bedding, throws, curtains and clothes that were out in the open. Keep kids and pets away from ash, wash toys, and wipe ash off pets. (MBARD)
5. The HVAC filter
The California Air Resources Board recommends using a high-efficiency filter (MERV 13 or higher) where your system allows, and recirculating indoor air during smoke. After heavy smoke, replace the filter, since it has been catching particles the whole time. (CARB, Smoke Ready California)
What about the smoke smell?
Smell usually comes from residue on surfaces and fabrics. Once hard surfaces are wiped, fabrics are washed and the filter is changed, the smell usually fades. If it does not, or if there is visible soot on walls or ceilings, or ash from a fire close to your home, contact a fire and smoke restoration specialist.
When a deep clean makes sense
For a light film of dust after a smoke day, a thorough top-to-bottom clean is usually enough, and it is exactly what a deep cleaning covers: baseboards, sills, vents, fixtures and the spots a weekly tidy-up skips.
Frequently asked questions
Should I vacuum ash inside my house?
Only with a vacuum that has a HEPA filter. Regular and shop vacuums can blow fine particles back into the air. Air quality agencies recommend gentle sweeping and damp wiping instead.
When is it safe to open the windows after smoke?
Check the current Air Quality Index first. Smoke can linger even when the sky looks clearer, so wait until local AQI readings are back to healthy levels.
How do I get rid of a smoke smell in my house?
Remove the fine residue first: damp-wipe hard surfaces, wash fabrics you can wash, and replace HVAC filters. Smell usually lingers in residue, so cleaning it up does more than air fresheners.
